Help Your Students Get the Most Out of SMARTHINKING!

* Remind students that SMARTHINKING is there for them! They won't get the help they need if they don't know it's there, especially during the first few weeks of classes.

* What do they get? Your students have unlimited access to live tutoring in the evening between 2PM to 5PM and 9PM to 1 AM (Eastern time), Sunday through Thursday, in the subject of their textbook, and they can submit a question anytime for a quick response, usually within 24 hours.

Professors at over 500 schools have used the SMARTHINKING Online Tutoring service! Here are a few of their user tips:

* How do they get it? Students need only take the username and password from the envelope in their textbook and create an account at www.smarthinking.com/houghton.html.

Before class starts:

* List SMARTHINKING as a resource on your syllabus. Include a reminder of when e-structors are available.

* Link to SMARTHINKING on your web page. Point students to www.smarthinking.com/houghton.html.

The first few weeks of class:

* Remind students not to throw away the booklet in their textbook. This booklet contains a username and password that will get them access to the system.

* Help your students to sign up for SMARTHINKING together. Some professors arrange for their students to register together at their computer lab.

* Print out and give your students the student hand-out. Students will then have instructions and information in hand when they need them.

During the semester:

* Remind students before tests, mid-terms and finals. Remind students before midterms and finals that they have online help from a live tutor when they're studying, if they can't get to a live person on campus.

* Remind students who need extra help. Remind students who need extra help that SMARTHINKING e-structors are there to go over problems or concepts with them in the evening.

* Require students to use the service or provide extra credit for students who use the service. You can ask them to print out the whiteboard of the tutoring session and hand it in.
