How to Teach in an Online Environment, Part 3

Instructional Goal:

Learnshop sessions will focus on the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the model with particular attention given to the unique challenges of developing online learning. Participants will also be introduced to the Quality Matters rubric and will develop and revise online course materials based on the rubric.

Topics include:

Constructing instructional strategies

Developing instructional materials that are aligned with course objectives
Identifying appropriate technologies
Delivering and validating instructional materials and processes

Rationale:

The Online course instructors must be prepared to teach in an online course environment while maintaining a high level of engagement for a variety of learners, and these faculty should learn to develop online courses based on a proven system, Quality Matters, designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components.

Agenda:

Learnshop 3: Online Course Showcase (90 min)
- What are some examples of online courses? This session will showcase examples of online courses. Examples will highlight collaboration, active learning, diversity of instructional content and strategies, and accountability of student performance.
- The Quality Matters rubric will be used to assist in identifying best practices, useful ideas, and changes that participants might make to showcased courses.
Learnshop 3: Evaluation (90min)
- This part of the session will focus on the formative, summative, and confirmative evaluation of online instructional materials. Methods and tools for defining, quantifying, and measuring quality in online courses will be presented. Participants will use provided templates, tools, and rubrics to develop a sample evaluation plan during a brainstorming session.
