Reaching Across Communities: Service in and out of the Classroom

Friday, October 10 & Saturday, October 11

Valley Verde Campus of Yavapai College

4:30-5:50pm: Breakout Session: Multimedia Infused Freshman Comp (M-203)

Alisa Cooper, South Mountain Community College

Come see how the new generation of freshman composition courses use podcasting, video, still images and interactivity to engage students in the writing process. Using various Web 2.0 tools, see how podcasting can be used not only as a mode of delivering content, but also as a mode of interaction between faculty and students. Video is used not just as a prewriting activity, but also as a mode of expression and argument. These and many others can be accomplished with little training and inexpensive tools that many students already own.

Instructor Mode of Delivering Content

Audio: Podcasting Announcements

Odeo is a podcasting service that allows for users to find and listen to podcasts, as well as create their own podcasting channel. I use Odeo for podcasting because it creates a nice player that can be embedded anywhere. Here is a link to my ENG102 podcasting channel: http://odeo.com/channels/139106-ENG102-Podcasts

Audio: Weekly Updates & Introductions to Content

Ning is a free online service for creating, customizing and sharing your own Social Networks. I teach all my courses out of a Ning social network, and use both the audio and video features available.

Most course management systems have tools built in to allow for podcasting or at least posting audio and video files. Our installation of Blackboard allows for uploading of both, and has a podcasting tool called Wimba. This is an example showing the simple player that Blackboard provides when uploading audio directly into Bb. This is from my ENG101 course where Prof. Sam, a computer generated voice, introduces students to theModule I Overview.

Video: Vodcasting Announcements

Vimeo makes it easy for you to upload any kind of video you make. You get 500 megabytes of storage every week, and they keep the original files so you (or others) can download them at anytime. You can also create vodcasting channels, albums and groups. Here is an example of a channel I created for a track team: http://vimeo.com/channel6780

Video: Sharing Course Content & Prewriting Activities

YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. You can also create playlists around a theme and students can comment on the videos, as well as post video replies. To get students thinking about personal freedoms and the argumentative essay, I suggested they watch this playlist:

Screencast & Slideshows: How-to Videos

Jing & Screencast.com

The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere. Snap a picture of anything on your desktop. Record video of what you do, or what you see. Instantly uploaded. Share in email, IM, or blogs.

Screencast.com is TechSmith’s media hosting solution that Jing uses to securely host your content. They include a complimentary Screencast.com account with 2 GB of storage and 2 GB of transfer bandwidth per month.

SlideShare is the best way to get your slides out there on the web, so your ideas can be found and shared by a wide audience.

Mode of Interaction Between Faculty & Students

Ustream.TV is the live interactive video broadcast platform that enables anyone with a camera and an Internet connection to quickly and easily broadcast to a global audience of unlimited size. With Ustream's interactive broadcast functionality, viewers can personally interact directly with whoever is broadcasting. Example: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/freshmancomp-live

Tokbox is a free service that lets you talk with people over live video. When you want to talk with anyone, just give them the link to you page - they click and you chat. They make it easy for you to put your TokBox on your social network profile, blog, or personal webpage. Anyone can come to your page and see a "Push to Talk" button. They click it and connect to you in real time using live video and audio.

Mode of Interaction Between Students

Utterli is a group messaging service. You can mix and mash text, pics, video and voice in one post for sharing with your friends and groups. It's a great discussion tool where students can participate by posting either photos, audio, video, text or combinations of all. And convenient and easy. Call your local Utterli number (712.432.6666 in the US) to record a new utter, listen and reply to other utters. Send video, pictures and text to go@utterli.com for public messages or private@utterli.com for private messages. Sending within 10 minutes of recording by phone will match up your video, picture or text with your recording.

Below is an example from last year's MaricopaTech planning session using Utterli. I created a widget that compiles any utter that is tagged: maricopatech.

Since then Utterli has changed names and upgraded to include group creation. It's easy to set up a group in Utterli. I set up the group below for my ENG101: Freshman Composition course. They use it to post discussion journals. We started with a discussion about ethos, pathos, and logos, and now they have progressed on to election issues.
