Goal: To provide a hands-on experience to develop a vodcast by uploading video files to a server, online video sharing sites and iTunes U, setting up a blog, using online file sharing sites to edit, organize and display videos, creating widgets to display videos on alternative sites like Blackboard and social networks. This event will also include vodcasting teaching and learning applications, vodcasting resources and readings, and a brief review of copyright issues in vodcasting.
A. School-hosted: Server and Blackboard
B. iTunesU
C. Free online video sharing sites: YouTube, Vimeo, Viddyou, Viddler
A. Ustream.TV: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/freshmancomp-live
B. BlogTV: http://www.blogtv.com/People/soul4real
You can embed your live stream anywhere on the internet and create a live chat with video and text. Here is an example of the Ustream channel embedded in our course network. I use it here for office hours. http://freshmancomp.ning.com/profile/drcoop
soul4real- Broadcast your self LIVE
C. BlipTV: http://soul4real.blip.tv/ No live streaming, but similar in that you create a channel with episode. It has a downloadable installer that adds support to Windows Movie Maker for sending videos directly to blip.tv. Just download, install, and click "Send To Web" in Windows Movie Maker. Windows Movie Maker Support (1.0 beta) Download Blip Movie Maker support (83K)
A. JayCut: Upload your sample video to JayCut and create a short video. Use day12.mp4 or VID00002.AVI. Online video editing sites really only let your trim the ends of a video and mix several videos together.
B. JumpCut: http://www.jumpcut.com/myhome/index
C. MotionBox: http://www.motionbox.com/mixer/edit
D. One True Media: http://www.onetruemedia.com
Share your Video Montages to your own personal TiVo channel. Then, your friends or family can watch your videos on their broadband-connected TiVo Series2™ or Series3™ box.
A. YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/soul4real Easy upload- ubiquitous. Create channels, groups and playlists. You can now add annotations to videos, captions and titles, and you can record directly on the site. HD Video (sort of). Embed video anywhere.
B. Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/channel6780 Easy to create a vodcast by creating a channel. Channel has forums, a calendar, and you can add an RSS feed from a blog to add text content. Create albums and groups. Upload HD video.
C. ViddYou: http://www.viddyou.com/soul4real Doesn't have a lot of features that the others do, but it takes true HD video and it looks the best by far. No Channel, groups, playlists.
D. Viddler: You can record directly on the site and your viewers or you can add video or text comments or tags on the timeline of your video. See below. This is a great teaching tool.
A. Register for an account (write down your username and password)
B. Upload your test video. If you don't have one, crab one from below. Right click and save as to your desktop.
C. Create a group, channel, or playlist in the chosen video site.
A. BlipTV: Simple. Click the sideways V on the bottom right corner of the video. Then choose the embed tab in the pop-up window. Only options are to grab the code. No customization. You can set it so your videos automatically post to your blog if you use Windows Movie Maker.
B. YouTube: Off to the left of the video is the URL and Embed Code. Copy or click the symbol next to the embed code box to customize. You can choose to "Don't include related videos" and change the color and add a border.
C. Vimeo: Click the "Embed" link on the video. Copy the embed code or click "Customize" and change size, color and on screen info.
D. ViddYou: Click "Share Vidd" under the video. Choose link or embed code. Click "More Embed Options" to customize the player.
E. Viddler: See Below: You get the option to get a full player or a stripped down version. You can choose the size. If you want the ability to add comments or tags on the timeline you'll need the default player. Grab the code at the bottom.
A. Do you already have a blog? Wordpress or Blogger? Blogger is okay, but Wordpress.com is a little different. You can't use the embed code you get from sites. You have to use the video URL that is given. Here are some instructions:
Paste your YouTube or Google Video URL in the space provided, or use the examples below. Just paste this in your post. The Post to WordPress button works great.

Google instructions [googlevideo=http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-8459301055248673864]
DailyMotion instructions [dailymotion id=5zYRy1JLhuGlP3BGw]
Post to WordPress button Use VodPod to post videos from hundreds of sites (beta)
B. Set up a Quick Blog with Posterous: No registration or sign-up. Just email your video to Posterous. You control where Posterous posts. Post to your Posterous blog or to... Just email the right address and they'll do the right thing.
Post Everywhere? | post@posterous.com as usual |
Twitter? | twitter@posterous.com |
Flickr? | flickr@posterous.com |
Tumblr? | tumblr@posterous.com |
Any other blog? | blog@posterous.com |
Posterous only? | posterous@posterous.com |
Combine them! | flickr+twitter@posterous.com |
Okay, so here's how this works. Send your video, photo, audio or text in an email to post@posterous.com. They reply with your new posterous immediately, creating your blog: http://yourname.posterous.com Yourname is taken from the email address - the part before the @ sign. You can change the blog name later. For video you can just send the link to the video and not the file (Doesn't work for ViddYou).
You can set up as many other sites you want or you can use Posterous as your vlog.
Try it: Email post@posterous.com »
You can attach any type of file and Posterous will post it along with the text of your email. They'll do smarter things for photos, MP3's, documents and video (both links AND files)
This is a great tool for distributing content to students: podcasts, files, vodcasts, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
A. iTunes: Right click on the RSS feed and copy link location. Open iTunes.
B. Google Reader:
C. iGoogle:
You have to decide where you will host your vlog. Will you use a channel on a video hosting site or will you use a blog? Once you decide then you can grade your RSS feed from that site.
